On Friday, the men's lacrosse team had a landslide win (24-3) against Thiel College. This marks the first win for the team under head coach Zachary Scarano. Goals were scored by Jackson Wright, Ryan Arthur, Kennedy Opie, and Caden Lake. Goalie CJ Veader was able to rack up five saves, allowing the Scots to maintain their impressive lead over the Tomcats.
Women's lacrosse, by contrast, experienced a landslide defeat (5-23) to Mount Holyoke College on Monday. Despite this, goalie Kayla Davidson achieved 13 saves and goal were scored by Hannah Bilowz, Violet Manson, Jocelyn Noyes, and Hannah Rose.
It's been a bad week for the tennis team, as the Fighting Scots recorded 1 win and 4 losses between Sunday and Friday. The men's team achieved a narrow (4-3) win against West Liberty University at the front of the week with single matches won by Jeffrey Bodner, James Wellborn, and Jack Makiej. Two of three doubles matches were also won by Gordon. But that's where the tennis team's luck ended, as both the men and the women's teams were defeated by Greenville University on Tuesday, followed by losses to Pfeiffer University on Friday.
The softball team spent the week at THE Spring Games - the world's largest collegiate softball event - in the Orlando-area cities of Kissimmee and Winter Haven. The Lady Scots won 3 of 8 games played this week, beginning with a narrow loss (8-9) to Albertus Magnus College on Monday. Later that day, Gordon was able to defeat Washington College 8-6, with an incredible comeback in the final inning earning the final four runs. On Tuesday, the Lady Scots lost both of their games to Desales University (1-5) and Wittenberg University (3-12). Two days later, the team narrowly defeated Mount Saint Mary College 15-13 before experiencing a 0-8 defeat to fellow Massachusetts school Wheaton College. Friday afternoon, the Scots lost 6-8 to Penn State New Kensington. With one game left in the tournament, Gordon ended with an impressive 18-1 win against Buena Vista University. With bases loaded in the first inning, Caoimhe Wernsing hit a grand slam, marking the first home run of the season.
Baseball players also traveled to the Sunshine State this week to participate in the RussMatt Florida Invitational. On Sunday, the Scots suffered a close 11-12 defeat to Albertus Magnus College. This was followed on Tuesday with two games against Martin Luther College, the first of which marked a 4-5 loss for the Scots. Their second game was a decisive comeback in which Gordon shut out MLC for the first five innings, leading the Scots to an imposing 14-2 triumph. The athletes' good fortune continued the next day with a 9-5 win against Juniata College. This, however, is where our baseball team's luck ended for the week. On Friday, Gordon lost both games to Penn State Altoona, although maintaining healthy competition for the Nittany Lions with ending scores of 2-3 and 9-7. As the weekend began, the Scots' time in Florida ended with a 13-15 defeat to Emerson College.
In their first outdoor meet of the season, both the men and women's track and field teams showcased some impressive athletic feats at the Myrtle Beach Collegiate Challenge over the weekend. Josie Hendricks got ninth place in the pole vault, with 3.2 meters - setting a new record for Gordon College. Will Hughes likewise broke the school record for the high jump with 1.95 meters - placing third. In the triple jump event, Elijah Wisdom yet again raised the bar for Gordon's athletes with a record 13.83 meters placing him in fifth place. Mikey Poteau broke the final school record of the weekend in his first college track meet for the 110 meter hurdles. Mr. Poteau finished in 15.68 seconds, narrowly edging into the Top 10. Overall, Gordon students achieved twelve top-10 finishes and thirteen personal records at Myrtle Beach.
